Written by Hank Williams in 1952, Your Cheating Heart is a Country classic that Rolling Stone ranked number 213 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Covered by the likes of Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Joni James and more recently Beck, it was a song that both Kelli and Andrew had loved from childhood.
If you’ve heard Kelli’s version of Me & Bobby McGee, you’ll know that she is less interested in replicating the original artist’s performance and more about climbing into the song and making it her own. Musicians are saying that Kelli’s voice is country with a blues rock edge; you can hear that in this clip from an earlier version of Your Cheating Heart that Kelli recorded for her “Songs I’ll Sing - I” Album in 2001.
What I love about this performance is that you have classic country instruments playing as if they were in a rock band. Kelli’s direction to Doug Livingston on the Pedal Steel was to pretend he was Jimi Hendrix which resulted in a great three way battle with Gabe Witcher on Fiddle and Randy Mitchell on Guitars. You can get Your Cheating Heart, Songs I’ll Always Sing here.
