Woo Hoo - Part 4 - Structure Development

Tomorrow sees Kelli back with the full band as we put together the show for Venice next week. With Chris and Mark joining us on Bass and Drums respectively, we have our work cut out. While we wait for schedules and the planets to align, we have been busy developing the songs and making them as good as we can.

Although we had intended to work on last Friday’s new track: “Take it easy on my heart” - we ended up refining Woo Hoo.

“I know what you’re thinking”

Having come up with the above lyric in the original groove, we started thinking about what kind of person would actually say something like that?  Throw in some of the other sentiments that were coming out at the time: “I’m crying again,” “There goes my heart,” and you start to get an idea of what kind of character is singing this track.  We decided that there was really only one kind of person who thought that they knew what you were thinking….a mad one.  Once we had made that decision - the rest seemed to come together pretty cleanly.

“You’re the stalker, what color’s your bedroom?”

Is pretty indicative of the kind of conversation that goes on during a writing session.  Having decided that the character was a crazy stalker - we wanted to get into their world.  Often time kelli will be the character and I’ll ask questions - sometimes it’s the other way round.  Before long we had this picture of an obsessed fan in their bedroom, surrounded by images of their desire - green walls and all - it was only later that Rob told us that most Mental asylums have green walls for the calming effect (just like the green room.)

Shaping the lyric to the music

Once you have an idea of what you want to say and how you’re going to say it - it then becomes a matter of just playing and playing until it sounds right.  This pass isn’t the final structure but its pretty close - see what you think - can you hear the stalker?
