Interesting report this morning from Harris Interactive; seems that almost 50% of US adults who use the Internet listen to, watch or actively seek to download media such as music or video. Encouraging stuff, although it was notable that of those adults, 33% preferred music related content whereas 31% preferred video content.
Which when you think of it, would explain the dramatic rise in YouTube this year. It really is astonishing when you think that most people hadn’t even heard of the site at the beginning of the year and yet it is now the 7th most visited website in America and was just bought for $1.6 billion. So what’s going on here?
With the lowering of economic and use-ability barriers to technology such as video cameras, broadband and computers in general, there seems to be an upswing in the amount of creativity that is going on in the world. Of course, that creativity might always have been there, but with the Internet, we are now able to see it. Artists like Kelli who make their living through creating songs and performances, need to deliver to a higher standard than your average “youtuber”; just because 350,000 people saw your “mash up” online, doesn’t mean they’re going to give you the gas money for the Big Black Bus!
Regardless of the fact that the original Internet economic model is finally being realized, (as companies buy ad space on the destination sites hoping to tempt some of those 700,000 eyeballs), what interests us is that people are creating, and they seem to be having a lot of fun doing it. We look forward to the video interpretations of Kelli’s music and will be actively encouraging it, more on that soon!
