MusicStrands - Music Recommendations, Playlists, Tags and Community
Continuing the concept of how to find the music you like - we’ve been playing with the musicstrands API for a month now and prefer this to Pandora’s concept. With Musicstrands you “Tag” the song you’re listening to with describer words - e.g. “happy, sad, tearful, mad….” - you get the idea. The API sends the info back up to the musicstrands database - and then anybody else looking for music that evokes those kinds of words - will have the song suggested to them.
For example, if I’m feeling down - I might want to listen to Kelli’s Empty Eyes, any track from Radiohead’s The Bends or even the second movement of Schubert’s string quintet in C. About as different as you can get - but the musicstrands tagging concept allows for these vastly different pieces to be presented at the same time, and that to me is cool - it opens up the musical universe and encourages people to hear different styles, different sounds, different compositions.
I’m as suspicious of attempting to define music by its DNA as I am of trying to define human beings from their DNA alone. Music like life, is a participatory experience and its different for everyone. Kelli’s music references a number of different styles and influences: Johnny Cash, Janice Joplin, Patsy Cline, Diana Krall, Billy Joel even Jim Morrison at times. They may not share the same DNA - but they can sure make us feel good!
