News that EMusic is nearing its 100 millionth download in the next two weeks (since November 2003,) underlines the ongoing trend towards the digital format for music. As the number 2 player in the market and not affiliated with a “closed” DRM system such as iTunes, Napster and even Microsoft’s new Zune, EMusic sells its music in the MP3 format - playable across every and all platforms - just like Kelli! Of course the market is still young, and the number 1 player, iTunes, has sold over 1.5 billion.
Also interesting this morning is the latest Nielsen information relating that although video enabled iPods are the fastest sellers, video accounts for around only 2 percent of content accessed. The digital video market is still pretty young, but there’s gotta be something to the fact that its easier to walk down the street or write a document while listening to your favorite music than it is to do the same things and watch your favorite show!

I think the future of the recording industry is going to be interesting. Not talking here about the big guys with their old techniques, outdated models and dabbling in new tech like amateurs too many times. (ooh stick our music on itunes - innovative - not!) - the interesting “stuff” is happening in places like this! You guys!
Until content producers come up with a really good way of getting people to buy/subscribe to video they can “placeshift” to their i##ds it’ll stay a smaller chunk of the market.
Oh BTW - emusic does indeed kick butt - their selection is pretty good, you dont have to download SW to buy (itunes - ukkk!!!) and their subscription plans are far better than just 99c for DRm riddled music from crapple!
As always, keep up the good work there!
Hello. Great job. I did not expect this on a Wednesday. This is a great story. Thanks!
