Last will and Testament

Rehearsal’s are just kicking ass at the moment - the band is coming together incredibly well and this is evident in the quality of the music that is coming from the room. Yesterday saw a quick run through the set list and then the focus turned to new material.

Songs appear in a myriad of different ways - sometimes the groove comes first, or someone has a progression that just sounds cool, Kelli might have a lyric in mind - it isn’t an exact science. With Kelli and Andrew having spent the last few months writing lyrics on a weekly basis, we went into yesterday’s rehearsal with the intent of finding music to go with them.

“Two Steps to Heaven,” which was worked up last week, came closer into focus and the structure was hammered out. It is a fast moving, driving, grooving song that makes you want to get up and go.

“Period Piece” struggled a little as it went from the confines of just guitar and voice to the whole band - however - a little play with the key - might just help. It’s very strange sometimes how a piece of music can work well with one type of instrumentation but need adjustments when the instrumentation changes. The structure got nailed - but we need to work on the overall feel.

The song that exploded out of the room yesterday was “Last Will & Testament.” Coming from a Benny Goodman style swing groove on the drums combined with a rocking guitar feel and lots of bizarrely shaped chords - this song ironically came to life!

Can’t wait for next week when we get to polish them further and develop others! Have a great weekend everybody….
