Unlike Your Cheating Heart, Ain’t No Sunshine and Bobby McGee, with Crazy it’s not just about the song but also about Kelli’s relationship with Patsy.
The shared experiences including: challenging childhoods, early musical success, near fatal car accidents and voices that cross genres have made Kelli one of Patsy’s biggest fans, as she says, “There was always a sense of safety when I listened to her, Patsy always made me feel safe. Her voice almost had little arms that would kind of pull you in.”
Kelli first recorded Crazy for the Songs I’ll Always Sing album in 2001. The instrumentation was classic country: acoustic guitars, simple keys and some superb work by Doug Livingston on the Pedal Steel. Here’s a clip from the end of the track as Kelli takes it into the final key change.

Kelli’s next challenge was to find the arrangement that was going to work with the ShadowMen behind her. Unlike the other covers that took several days to develop, Crazy came together in a couple of hours. The direction this time was to make the musical accompaniment as minimal as possible and set up the track as the vocal showcase it should be, parts were kept to a minimum and the platform was created for Kelli to do her thing. Which, we think, she did pretty damn well - have a listen to Kelli singing Crazy.
