Crazy - Part 1

Crazy is a scary song to do - really - you’d have to be a little crazy to think of covering it. The song is insane - the music is such an intricate arrangement of chords, progressions, melodies and harmonies and that’s just the first 20 seconds!

Written by Willie Nelson in 1961, it was a huge hit for Patsy Cline and that’s the version that comes to mind when I think of this track. The performances are stunning:

Patsy’s voice is incredible - so low in the register, such warmth and tone but with the ability to go up and still sound perfectly sweet and clear - what an amazing singer. If you haven’t heard it for a while - here’s a vinyl version of Patsy Cline singing Crazy on YouTube.

It wasn’t just Patsy’s voice that made this song stand out - the arrangement put together by producer Owen Bradley was the perfect accompaniment while the playing of session masters like Floyd Cramer’s incredible key work was immaculate.

It’s been covered by many artists over the years - most recently it was a hit for LeAnn Rimes and it comes in at #85 on Rolling Stone’s top 500 songs of all time. I suspect everybody approaches the song with the same respect and in this keyboard player’s mind - some trepidation.

When Liz was looking for 3 or 4 covers to round out the Press Kit - it was an obvious choice and Kelli was ready.
