Cake…..

As I think we’ve mentioned before; songwriting is not an exact science - in fact - science would be completely the wrong term for it. Sometimes, it’s more like - “Home Economics!”

Yesterday’s session was perhaps the most bizarre to date - having spent the first two hours drawing a blank, the only thing that was coming through was a desire for Cake - and not just any old cake - Carrot Cake. So - off we went to downtown San Clemente in hopes of finding suitable nourishment for our creative minds. Well, as you might imagine, the focus on Carrot Cake soon expanded to include:

Two different types of carrot cake
A triple chocolate fudge cake
A yellow sponge cake
McVities Digestive biscuits and Hobnobs
Various assorted British candy
and..oh yeah
Burgers and Chicken Wings at the Shorehouse Restaurant

You can see the aftermath below!

Of course the really strange thing about this approach to songwriting is that it did indeed work - there is nothing more interesting than real life human beings and places: we’d like to say thanks to the Blind Waitress for the inspiration!

With ideas coming in from everywhere, we decided to continue the story of Daddy - the fugitive that is sung about in Ride and bring in a little of the Devil from Preacher’s Daughter. Complete with authentic buffalo wing sauce, we sketched the concept out on a napkin and took it home to write the song.

Before any serious lyric writing could be done - we needed to increase our sugar levels and perform a little taste test. Andrew tries to keep down the vast amount of food that has entered his system…

This cake bore a spooky similarity to the song in that - it looked good from the outside - but once you got into it….

…well - you can see from Kelli’s face what we thought of that one…..

Coming in 3rd and the winner of the Bronze medal - The Yellow Sponge Cake: Nice firm texture, good icing, not too sweet….

In second and proud wearer of the Silver Medal, the triple chocolate fudge cake - Yum!

The overall winner, (you can tell by how much was actually eaten!)

And after all that - did we actually sit down and write the song? You bet we did! Here is “Daddy,” well, that’s what we think the song is called! It’s not quite right yet - there are a couple of loose lines and words that need to be tweaked - but it’s pretty much there.

The boys are all back next week and we’re in rehearsal come Thursday, it’ll be fun to see how this one develops. Hey, if we’re good - maybe Kelli can bring more of the winning carrot cake….that’s if the devil left any……

Who would believe that Andrew had a very expensive education when you see his handwriting. never mind, we do love him.
